Saint John Airport served record travellers in 2018
New Community Consultative Committee will aid in sustaining 2018 momentum
Saint John, NB – The Saint John Airport (YSJ) broke all previous traffic records in 2018 and was recognized as being the fastest growing small airport within the National Airport System. President and CEO Derrick Stanford made the announcement during the Saint John Airport Authority’s annual general meeting.
Further, YSJ’s 2018 record-setting increase in passengers, combined with expanded investments in capital projects and other improvements, contributed to boosting the local economy.
“The past year has been an exciting time of growth and improvement for the Saint John Airport,” said Airport President and CEO Derrick Stanford. “We made significant financial investments to serve our passengers better by greatly enhancing the aesthetics and convenience of the airport terminal and the short- and long-term parking areas. Visitors can now enjoy a greatly enhanced airport.”
Other noteworthy modernization and safety-oriented improvements, include:
- In February, YSJ was the first airport in Canada to install a public EpiPen cabinet and train staff to administer the epinephrine auto-injectors should anyone experience a life-threatening allergic reaction while visiting the airport.
- In March, YSJ became an early adopter of EhEye artificially intelligent software to enhance airport security. The software, developed in Saint John, scans the airport’s live CCTV feed and alerts security personnel of situations that may need their immediate attention.
- In April, YSJ announced first-ever public funding ($10 million from Transport Canada’s National Trade Corridors Fund and $4 million from the Government of New Brunswick) to rehabilitate and modernize the airfield. The total, $20.4 million project, comprises the complete modernization and rehabilitation of the airport’s two runways, taxiways, and tarmac, as well as safety-related improvements (e.g., Runway End Safety Areas (RESAs), high-intensity and energy-saving LED centreline and edge runway lighting), and terrain alterations that ensure the Saint John Airport complies with the latest and emerging airport design standards.
This year also saw the Saint John Airport launch an inaugural stakeholder survey of travellers and community members. Of the 375 responses received, the vast majority described YSJ as a convenient, competitive and reliable airport that meets their travel needs.
“We’ve been working hard to expand and enhance passenger services and flight options over the last two years and it’s paying off,” said Airport President and CEO Derrick Stanford. “Local travellers are choosing YSJ over other nearby options more than ever, something we intend to build on with the assembly of a community consultative committee – which we’ll soon be recruiting for.”
The new committee will release its terms of reference and encourage applications from airport customers and stakeholders in the weeks to come.
