Statement in response to federal announcement
Saint John (NB) – Saint John Airport’s President and CEO, Derrick Stanford, released the following statement in response to the Government of Canada’s November 30 fiscal update and funding announcement:
“The Saint John Airport is encouraged by the recent federal fiscal update and announcement of funding for the aviation sector, including small airports like ours.
While we are still awaiting greater clarity on the measures announced, particularly around support for our airline partners, testing and eligibility for the various programs referenced in the Minister’s speech, we recognize that it’s an important first step.
Today’s announcement reflects the importance the federal government places on the entire travel industry and sustaining it for future service and growth. They clearly recognize the investments that have been made in building the country’s aviation infrastructure and want to preserve it.
We know airports have a direct impact on regional economic growth and people attraction – more than almost any other sector or industry. Pre-COVID, the Saint John Airport contributed more than $60 million to our area’s economic output.
With the right support to help see us through this period of turbulence, we’ll get back to where we were: serving our business and leisure travelers and contributing to our region’s economic recovery and growth plans.”
