YSJ JOINS AIRPORTS AROUND THE WORLD IN EFFORT TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS
SAINT JOHN, NB – Saint John Airport Inc. received Level 1 Certification from the Airport Carbon Accreditation program at the 2019 Airports Council International – North America Conference in Tampa, Florida.
“The Saint John Airport is committed to helping our local and global environment,” said YSJ President and CEO, Derrick Stanford. “I’m proud that we’ve officially begun our journey to reduce YSJ’s carbon footprint by receiving the first level of certification from the Airport Carbon Accreditation program.”
Mr. Stanford accepted the Level 1 Certification on behalf of the Saint John Airport on September 16 at the 2019 Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA) Annual Conference & Exhibition held September 15 – 17, 2019, in Tampa, Florida.
Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is a voluntary global carbon management program for airports that independently assesses and recognizes airports' efforts to manage and reduce their CO2 emissions. The program was launched by European airports' trade body ACI EUROPE at their Annual Congress in June 2009. The ACA program promotes environmental efficiency and carbon reduction through four different levels:
• Level 1 Certification (Mapping): Determining baseline emissions from sources within the operational boundary of the airport.
• Level 2 Certification (Reduction): Creating and implementing a Carbon Management Plan Showing a reduction in the airport’s carbon footprint over multiple years.
• Level 3 Certification (Optimization): Widening the scope to include third party emissions. Engage third parties to take part in the Carbon Management Plan.
• Level 4 Certification (Neutrality): Implementing strategies to offset the carbon emissions from the airport that could not be reduced in Levels 2 and 3.
The Saint John Airport will track annual carbon emission sources, implement carbon reduction initiatives, and report annually to ACA with a goal to reach Level 2 Certification by 2022.
There are now 282 accredited airports globally. Fifty-three of them have reached the highest, currently available level of CO2 management – carbon neutrality.
