New CEO Named for Saint John Airport
Derrick Stanford Will Assume YSJ Leadership July 18
SAINT JOHN, NB, JUNE 23, 2016 – A senior executive with an extensive background in sales and marketing has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Saint John Airport. Derrick Stanford, 52, emerged as the leading candidate following an international search.
Mr. Stanford was most recently senior vice president of Enterprise Sales at Intelex Technologies Inc. in Fredericton. A Montreal native, Mr. Stanford graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1987 and has spent his entire career in increasingly senior sales and marketing roles across North America. He has lived and worked in New Brunswick for the past 12 years, primarily in the technology sector.
Norm McFarlane, chair of the Saint John Airport board of directors, said Stanford’s business leadership experience will be key to developing the local airport’s physical assets, such as vacant land holdings, as well as selling the airport to the greater Saint John community. “Competition from airports in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Maine is intense,” noted McFarlane. “One of Mr. Stanford’s key tasks will be to ensure the Saint John Airport retains more than its fair share of southern New Brunswick’s air travellers.”
For his part, Stanford says he is looking forward to the challenge of being part of the Saint John Airport’s future. “I’m confident my marketing experience, combined with the air carrier expertise of our staff, will retain the Saint John Airport’s role as a vital transportation link for local business and leisure travellers. We need to take steps to improve passenger numbers and I intend to work with our airline partners and others to ensure this growth takes place.” Stanford also noted that non-air-travel revenue growth and airport improvement, such as runway upgrades and terminal enhancements will be priorities.
Mr. Stanford’s spouse Katherine is a Fredericton native. They have three adult children. They will be moving to Saint John this summer.
Saint John Airport Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation serving air travel needs of 250,000 passengers per year, and is a key element in the economic and social development of this region. The airport’s economic impact is estimated at $66 million, with over 570 jobs created directly and indirectly. All revenue of the Saint John Airport is reinvested in operations and facilities on-site. With several direct daily flights to the hubs of Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax, as well as seasonal service to southern destinations, passengers can connect to nearly any city in the world.
