YSJ is First Airport in Canada to Install Public Epi-Pen Cabinet
SAINT JOHN, NB – Saint John Airport Inc. installs public EpiPen Auto-Injectors to respond to potentially life-threatening allergic reactions.
YSJ President and CEO Derrick Stanford said, “The Saint John Airport is the first airport in Canada to install an Epi-Pen cabinet. We’re proud to support Be Ready Health Care, a local New Brunswick company who developed these kits. Every year more than 260,000 passengers travel through our airport and their safety is important to us. Having this device on site could save a life should anyone experience a severe allergic reaction.”
An EpiPen auto-injector is used to deliver an emergency treatment of adrenaline (epinephrine) to people who are at risk or have a history of life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
An alarmed wall cabinet has been recently installed at the Saint John Airport. The cabinet contains both, one adult and one child dose of epinephrine auto injectors. YSJ First Responder staff have been trained to administer the auto-injectors should an emergency occur. Before the cabinet was installed, an educational session was held in order to provide them with the necessary knowledge to correctly recognize and respond to an anaphylactic reaction.
“I’m pleased that the Saint John Airport has recognized the importance of having publicly available epinephrine auto injectors in a highly visible, accessible and centrally located area,” said Kelly Dunfield, Founder and President of Be Ready Health Care. “Our goal is for no person to suffer fatal anaphylaxis due to the fact that Epinephrine was not available in a timely manner. Many people either do not fill their prescription or do not carry their EpiPen with them. Some people don’t even know they have an allergy.”
